Measure Performance

Here are a few important email metrics to measure your email performance:

Clickthrough Rate (CTR)

The ratio of people who clicked on one or more of your links to the total number of people who opened your email.

CTR gives insight into how engaging and relevant your content is for your readers.

Conversion Rate

Anytime a reader takes a desired action after following a link in your email. For example, if 300 readers out of 10,000 sign up, then your conversion rate would be 3%.

Make it as easy as possible for readers to take action.

Bounce Rate

Anytime an email cannot be delivered.

  • A hard bounce is due to inactive, closed, or incorrect email addresses. Remove these emails from your subscriber list.
  • A soft bounce is not permanent like when your recipient has a full inbox or their email server is down. You can resend your message to any address marked with a soft bounce.

Forwarding Rate

Percentage of readers who clicked on a “share this” button or a “forward to a friend” link.

Include a small CTA at the end of each email urging subscribers to share your message with a friend.

Leverage other metrics that your email service provider are already tracking! Remember that you can only improve what you track, so keep on tracking and improving your emails!
