Tailor Your Resume to the Application

Depending on the externship you’re applying to, you need to tailor the master resume you created to each opportunity!

🙅‍♀️ As a student... don’t apply with your entire master resume (unless some government applications may ask for other and more information).

Nobody has the time to read your 3-pages long resume. As a matter of fact, recruiters only take 6-7 seconds to look at a resume, so make it concise and relevant on 1 page!

About 20-70% of small and mid-sized to large companies use ATS (Jobscan).

ATS (Applicant Tracking System) is a computer software program that collects and sorts all resumes to help recruiters screen candidates that match the profile of their ideal candidates, based on the job description (title, desired skills, required experience).

Machine Learning Data Filtering Outline

Recruiters often filter resumes by searching for key skills and job titles.

88%

of companies have technology that screens out qualified applicants because they don’t match the search terms (HBS).

A thoughtfully tailored resume will:

Match what recruiters are looking for.

Increase your chance of moving into the next round (usually interviews).

✅ Make you stand out as a more suitable candidate.

Here is where you can consider other resume templates, depending on your:

  • Industry and Career Field:
    • Traditional and technical industries (e.g. finance, law, engineering, IT) often prefer conservative, concise templates. Stick to classic fonts like Times New Roman or Arial, and use a simple, structured layout like the resume template we provided.
    • Creative fields (e.g. design, marketing) encourage more visually appealing and modern templates. You can experiment with fonts, colors, and layouts to showcase your creativity and design skills found on sites like Canva. However, avoid using your image as it increases the risk of bias from the recruiter and any distracting/messy designs.
  • Your Personal Brand: choose a template that reflects your personality and professional style. Consider the overall tone and visual appeal of the template.
  • Readability and Scannability: ensure the template is easy to read and skim. Use clear headings, font sizes, and spacing.
  • ATS-Friendly: if you're applying online, choose a template that is ATS-friendly. This means using simple formatting, avoiding graphics or tables, and using keywords from the opportunity description.

How you tailor the resume will depend on your situation.
