What is a personal career path?

Watch this video by MaiLinh to learn why a career path is important and how to utilize Ikigai.

Task: Self-identify your Ikigai

Now, take 8 minutes to make a list of the Ikigai components. Make a copy of this template to get started!

After you complete the list, take a moment to notice any patterns that came up and what stands out to you.

Task: Take the personality & career assessment

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a self-report inventory that identifies a person's personality type, strengths, suitable careers, and preferences. It was developed by Isabel Myers and Katherine Briggs, based on their work with Carl Jung's theory of personality types. Today, it's one of the world's most widely used and proven psychological tools.

No type is better than the other. You are unique and this is designed to help you learn more about yourself.

Take the free assessment here. After you finish, take a few minutes to read your results and identify what resonates and doesn't resonate. Make sure you navigate to "Career Paths" to learn more about which careers are suitable and not suitable for your personality.

Setting yourself up to succeed in the future of work

Task: Research your career interests and identify the top career path to explore

  1. Google the careers you are interested in to know:
    1. What does someone in this career path do
    2. The possible post-secondary plan for this career path
    3. College major, career progression
    4. Years of school or training required
    5. The salary range and the average for this career path
  2. To help you think of some, access the Careers of the Future Report here. Reflect on which sector, Technology, Healthcare, or Business, is the most suitable for you.
  3. Then, utilize our curated research here (scroll to your sectors) for the roles that you aren't familiar with and interested in to see if you'd like to consider it as a potential career.
  4. Reflecting on your tasks and essential concepts, choose one career path that you want to explore. You'll start by exploring this chosen career path with work-based learning experiences (e.g. job shadow, internship, mentorship), but you are free to change it as you learn more about whether or not it's still suitable for you. It's a place to get you started!

Ex.

  • I am interested in business since I like decision-making, leadership, and the concept of starting my own business. However, within the business careers, I don't know what an actuary or financial examiner does. So, I did a Google search to better understand those roles and found that they don't necessarily align with my preferences since they are more numbers-related and I prefer to be visionary.
  • Rather, product management seems like a really interesting choice due to the intersection between business and technology, without getting too technical and allowing me to work with a diverse group of people. I want to explore being a product manager, because I am good at managing my time, being a leader, and collaborating with others from both technical and non-technical backgrounds. I also am very interested in technology and the power it has to change the way we do things. I desire a career that allows me to be remote and travel, which product management offers while also paying well.
