The Why and How of Asking Questions

Asking questions builds strong connections and maintains a great impression.

Person bothering colleague from working

It can feel intimidating or like you’re bothering people with questions... but your supervisor and team would rather you come to them than let you marinate in the same thought until it’s too late.

The right timing includes during check-ins, anytime someone looks open (not on call), or over the team’s messaging platform.

Forming great questions is simpler than you think!

  • Prepare in Advance: Research relevant subjects beforehand so you can ask informed questions.
  • Listen Actively: Pay attention to conversations and presentations, and ask follow-up questions to clarify points or delve deeper.
  • Balance Quantity and Quality: Don't overwhelm others with too many questions, while making sure the ones you ask are thoughtful and relevant.

Scenario: Your supervisor gives you the results of a Google Forms survey that aims to gather feedback on a new mobile app. The survey was filled out by 100 participants. Your supervisor wants you to provide averages on the quantitative data and provide analysis on the qualitative data.

Some questions you may ask are:

  • In finding the averages of the quantitative data, would you like me to also record the highest and lowest numbers?
  • Would you like for me to analyze on Google Docs/Sheets?
