Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Right of Access
Passed in 1996, HIPAA provides rules for privacy and security for Protected Health Information (PHI), which is information about healthcare or payment healthcare directly linked to an individual (e.g. names, email addresses).
Who collects PHI?
- Healthcare providers: hospitals, clinics (aka FC!), doctors, etc.
- Health plans: health insurance companies, employer-sponsored health plans, government programs, etc.
- Healthcare clearinghouses: organizations process nonstandard health information and convert data into standard formats.
