How to Check In with Your Supervisor

You should ask how your supervisor prefers to get updates on your progress.

Here are a couple of common ways:

1. End-of-Day/Week Report

Even if they don’t ask for this, it’s always appreciated and shows you take the extra mile in your work. At the end of the day/week, share your progress and any challenges you are facing, preferably before your check-in calls with your manager so that you spend more time during it having a productive conversation rather than just reporting.

👉 Use this template under "End-of-Day/Week Report".

2. Check-in Call

Usually, your supervisor will set up a 1:1 or team weekly check-in call where you'll need to give them an update about your work. During this call, we recommend you to:

  1. Build rapport by showing interest in their life - ask questions, make small talk, and expand on any shared interests.
  2. Report your updates, the impact you've made, key learnings, and challenges (this is easier if you've already done your end-of-week report).
  3. Ask for feedback to improve your performance.
  4. Share your career/professional goals, so that they can help you get there.
