About Gateway and HomeCook

Gateway is an educational company matching students to internships in their field of interest. We partner with the most innovative organizations, like HomeCook, to provide high school and college students with hands-on learning experiences.

Gateway stands out for several reasons:

  1. Our upskilling promise: the training prep ensures that you learn the knowledge and skills to excel as an intern, becoming an asset for organizations.
  2. Our passion for advancing the next generation: we are experts in unleashing greater potential in young leaders.
  3. Our ongoing support: from start to end, you will always have a mentor available, frequently checking in and providing you with the help you need.

We partnered with HomeCook to provide you with this exclusive software engineering opportunity. This is their story:

The COVID-19 pandemic turned the food industry upside down. The entire industry was shut down overnight, with no way to return properly. HomeCook founders, Tayana Harrison and Hassan Badru, discovered this struggle after many of their culinary industry friends went from running successful culinary businesses or working in restaurants to becoming food entrepreneurs and cooking out of their homes.

However, at some point, they needed to grow beyond their home kitchen but couldn’t find a commercial kitchen with flexible hours at an affordable price. On the flip side, many restaurants and commercial kitchens struggled to open their doors again with the proper protocols, and then once they did, they were met with less demand for their kitchen to remain open.

HomeCook's mission is to connect food entrepreneurs to commercial kitchens, provide industry insights to everyone in the industry, and connect others in the industry so everyone can learn and enhance their business.

Getting on the same page

There are a lot of internships out there. If you joined Gateway, it's because you are just like us. You truly believe that hard-to-learn skills like software engineering require much more than just showing up on day one which makes internships look easy.

Internships require hard work because you can only be successful by preparing yourselves ahead of time, getting ongoing mentoring, and learning from your mistakes.

So, we here at Gateway came up with this comprehensive program. There will be many new things you'll learn that will focus on enabling you to become a better team player.

We will present you with one challenge after another, but a mentor will always be looking at your process to assist and help you out.

WORD challenge

But what if you already know some of this?

Some of you already have some software engineering knowledge or experience, and some of you with no experience at all.

One thing is for sure: there is always a whole lot more to learn.

This training prep also enables us to get to know you, your learning process, and your learning curves better, allowing us to help guide you toward achieving the best possible results.

we help you succeed

How can you ask for help?

The human brain requires a lot of energy to make any decision, especially when lots of variables are taking part in the equation. This training prep will be hard because we are re-designing the way you make these decisions. You will have to think similarly to the way software developers think. Do not worry though, a time will come when everything you do will become acquired behavior.

You will feel overwhelmed or confused, so ask for help!! And keep up the hard work - you will make it!

Have you heard of Einstein? Really smart people are always the ones who ask more questions. They are not afraid of not knowing or making mistakes. The only way we can really help you is if you accept our mentorship by asking for help. To be able to do this, when you are stuck, email MaiLinh at mailinh@careergateway.io.
